Castelluccio Spring

01. MAY - 08. MAY 2027 / CHF 1550

The almost circular plateau in central Italy is simply beautiful. The bare grass hills offer the ideal terrain for ground handling, soaring close to the ground and top landing training in any wind direction.

Programme

The plateau of Castelluccio lies 1300m above sea level in central Italian Umbria. Surrounded by bare, round grass hills we have the perfect spot for our ground handling camp.
With low winds we head for the higher areas on the surrounding hills, where we learn different strong wind launch techniques, kiting with the glider and top landing. When the wind blows stronger, we literally have a whole plateau as a playground.
As soon as the thermal sets in, the surrounding hills and the majestic Monte Vettore invite us to venture long thermal flights. On some days the thermals reach to over 3000m altitude.

The focus of this training week is the improvement of:

  •      reverse take-off technique
  •      glider handling in strong winds
  •      slope and top landings

We round off the day with a glass of white wine or an Aperol Spritz in the medieval village of Castelluccio, which has been steadily rebuilding since the 2016 earthquake and continues to regain its charm year after year. Our cozy agriturismo L'Aquila is located right in the heart of the village. For dinner, we can choose from several traditional Umbrian taverns.

Throughout the week, the distances between our flying site and accommodation are minimal, allowing us to devote the entire day to soaring, ground handling, and thermal flying.
